Nemorino loves Adina, but it's the worst kind of love: unrequited love. So when a suspicious "doctor" arrives in town with an elixir of love, Nemorino thinks his troubles are over. It is, in fact, strong brandy, and the magic is Dutch courage.
This scene, "Caro elisir," is the moment the effects take hold - Nemorino, giddy on the brandy, mistakes its confidence for the cure he paid for, and starts to believe he might actually have a chance with Adina. This modern imagining moved the action out of the village square and into the lobby of an apartment building.
This production was made as part of British Youth Opera's Serena Fenwick Programme, staged at Garsington Opera.
